New Advertising Codes launched

Following a comprehensive root and branch review and a full public consultation, the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) today publish the new UK Advertising Codes which will come into effect on 1 September 2010.

CAP welcomes announcement on extension of CAP Code online

On 8 March, the Advertising Association (AA) formally announced its recommendation for CAP to extend its Code to marketing on companies’ own websites.

Currently, the CAP Code covers paid-for communications such as pop-up and banner ads, paid-search and viral ads. However, nearly two thirds of the complaints to the ASA about online marketing activity presently fall outside remit. The proposed extension of the Code would plug this regulatory gap, ensuring enhanced protection for consumers and children online and a level-playing field for business in this significant medium.
